Whisky May

May is a great time in Scotland out of doors. In woods throughout the country, there are carpets of bluebells (not to be confused with the later Scots bluebells - really harebells – on the heath). And, botanically speaking, there are plenty of species in flower in the Highlands. For some you don’t even have to climb high into the hills. Look out for mountain avens on the dunes by the sea near Durness in the far north-west – the plant’s little white flowerheads track the sun like a radar dish. Scotland’s gardens are also ablaze with peat-loving rhododendrons – they love it here.
